Here are some hints on using the Happy Horse Hay Steamer

DO I NEED TO FILL THE BOILER TO THE TOP EVERY TIME.

If you are going to steam one net then only partially fill the boiler with water, as you would if only making coffee in your kettle for one. This will reduce the boiling up time.

IT SEEMS TO BE TAKING LONGER TO STEAM THE NETS.

An average net will take about 20 to 25 minuets per net to steam from when the boiler is boiling. The time it takes to steam a net depends on the quality of the hay and how compressed it is into the hay net. If you are using slabs of hay from a bail it will obviously take longer than hay pulled off and broken up. You may need to experiment on the first few nets to set the time to suit your needs. You can help decrease the time it takes to steam a net by pouring a liter of water over the net before steaming. This will help the steam to penetrate the hay and steam quicker.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RUN.

The cost of running this unit for one hour at United Kingdom power rates is no more than 15p.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I FORGET TO SWITCH IT OFF.

The unit has an automatic power cut of, that is triggered should the boiler run dry. It should be noted that the switch is thermal and will re connect when the boiler temperature falls. Prolonged usage of this will result in damage to the boiler and we recommend that you purchase a timer suitable to plug the unit into. It will need to be rated to cope with 10 amps.

HOW LONG BEFORE THE HORSE CAN EAT THE HAY.

You should allow the net to stand for 15 minuets before hanging up for the horse.

HOW DO I STORE PREPARED NETS

If you are preparing nets for a night or morning feed, you can place the steamed net into a large plastic bag and seal it off. This will retain the moisture and prevent the net from drying out. It is recommended that nets stored in this way should be used within 12 hrs.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS.

Always make sure the unit is used on flat even ground.
Make sure the unit is connected to an earth protected power point.
Clean the hay bag out regally, to prevent the steam from not circulating.
Do not cover the boiler unit or restrict any of the safety valves.
Do not attempt to use a damaged boiler.
Keep children and animals away STEAM IS HOT.
